Before the opening of Croydon Canal in 1809, the area was an unoccupied part Penge Common between Crystal Palace and South Norwood. The common was enclosed in 1827 however, giving a way to Elmers End Road and Anerley Road (formerly known as Clays Lane).
The first house in the area was built by a Scottish silk manufacturer - William Sanderson, who called his new home ‘Anerly’ - the Scottish word for ‘solitary’. Anerly was later adapted as Anerley by London and Croydon Railway Company upon creation the station in 1839. As the size of nearby settlements grew so did the use of the name of Anerley.
It’s almost hard to believe that central London is only 25 minutes away, as leafy Anerley offers peacefulness away from the bustling city. It is also the perfect place for young professionals, buy-to-let investors and first-time buyers because of its great transport links
to London and value for money as it is known to be more affordable than other parts of London.
Anerley offers an abundance of traditional pubs, bars with craft beers, cafés, antique markets, local grocery and book shops, gift stores and many more. This all can be found in the nearby Crystal Palace and its illustrious park.
The many schools
offer primary and secondary, special schools, religious schools and grammar schools. Ofsted ratings have been generally positive with many schools attaining ‘good’ and ‘outstanding’ scores.
As the extended East London Line and Anerley Regeneration Project (ARP) appeared on the picture, the area started experiencing an increase in independent shops and cafés
Anerley is perfectly connected to multiple transport links. It became part of the London Overground network and provides easy access to North and Central London. There are also direct trains to Shoreditch High Street, Whitechapel and Rotherhithe.
‘’Anerley is a quiet, short walk to Crystal Palace Park and the triangle and has great transport links with friendly local people.‘’
