Beckton was named after Simon Adams Beck, the chairman of the Gas Light and Coke Company who bought 540 acres of land in 1870 to develop Europe's largest gasworks. Before this Beckton was open low lying flat marshland but slag from the gasworks piled so high that the Beckton Alps Dry Ski Slope was built by a partnership including Michael Jackson in the early 1980s. Officially being opened by Diana, Princess of Wales in 1989.
In more recent times, Beckton has been redeveloped as the industry has left the area. It is now primarily a residential area located in the Borough of Newham and has a variety of retail and supermarket parks. This promising area has excellent transport links

One of many attractions Beckton has to offer is East Ham nature reserve, a short walk from the town centre.
