Brockley is a district of South London, located in the London Borough of Lewisham. The area sits six miles south-east of Central London which makes it an easy commute via rail, bus, cycle or car.
Development in Brockley was started by the Tyrwhitt Blake family in the 19th Century. Succeeding the industrialisation of London, the family saw an opportunity to build large Victorian houses for the professional classes and create a more exclusive suburban neighbourhood. However, During World War II Brockley suffered a significant amount of bomb damage. Today you can still find a vast amount of Victorian style properties as well as terraced houses, detached villas and cosy cottages.
Brockley contains some very attractive open green spaces such as Blythe Hill, Brockley and Ladywell Cemeteries (now a nature reserve), and Hilly Fields. Hilly Fields has magnificent views over the city of London and the Hilly Fields Midsummer Fayre is a celebrated annual community event, running for over 30 years.
A notable place of interest is the local treasure Rivoli, the last remaining 1950s ballroom in London and a popular location for dance and music events. Brockley also boasts plenty of good quality restaurants, nightclubs, theatre events and coffee shops.
There are many schools
including primary and secondary, special schools, religious schools and grammar schools. Ofsted ratings have been generally positive with many schools attaining ‘good’ and ‘outstanding’ scores.
