Catford is in the London borough of Lewisham and stands on the west side of the river Thames. The name “Catford” derives from the place where cattle crossed the River Ravensbourne in Saxon times.
The architecture of Catford was heavily influenced by the 1960’s and 1970’s where many of the buildings were modernised. Now there is major regeneration work starting which aims to create new retail space, improve road networks, provide new community facilities and open spaces. There will also be the provision of hundreds of new homes across the town centre. These will mix with the Edwardian, Victorian and modern flats which you can already find.
Catford’s noticeable landmark is the Catford Cat, a giant sculpture of a black cat which you can find above the entrance to the Catford Centre. The centre is small, housing a few high street stores and food chains. The town centre has cafes, shops and street food making Catford a pleasant place to shop and socialise. The Broadway Theatre brings local and international talent to the area, putting this small town on the map.
While Catford is not on the underground line, although the local council is lobbying to change this, there are two Catford train stations which provide access to Blackfriars, Charing Cross and Cannon Street.
