Deptford is located within the London Borough of Lewisham, south east London. It has a strong south London identity and is immersed in history, with Deptford Railway Station being one of the oldest in the world.
From the mid-16th century to the late 19th century Deptford housed the first Royal Navy Dockyard, Deptford Dockyard. This area was also where the adventurer Francis Drake was knighted by Queen Elizabeth I.
Now the area attracts creative and younger types, with a community of artists based in studios around Creekside, and often first-time buyers. The area has a mixture of social housing and new flats, and you can still find 17th century cottages, 18th century houses with carved wooden porches, and Victorian properties around Deptford Park.
Deptford station has trains passing through London Bridge to Cannon Street. Deptford Bridge in Zone 2 and 3 is a Docklands Light Railway station and provides access to Heron Quays, a few minutes’ walk from Canary Wharf which is ideal for commuters. There are also bus routes towards Lewisham and Surrey Quays.
There are many schools
which include primary and secondary, special schools, religious schools and grammar schools. Ofsted ratings have been generally positive with many schools attaining ‘good’ and ‘outstanding’ scores.
