Poplar is in the East End of London and part of the London borough of Tower Hamlets. It is a mainly residential district and houses a beautiful old church on Poplar high street, All Saints Church. The area takes its name from Black Poplar trees that once flourished on the moist soil in the area.
From the 17th century Poplar provided homes for the workers of the Limehouse
, Isle of Dogs
and Blackwall docks. When West India Docks opened in 1802 there was a massive splurge of housing developments to cater for the workers, consisting of terrace cottages. You can find Victorian, 18th and 19th century terrace houses, 20th century council estates and there are new housing schemes cropping up.
Poplar is minutes from the famous local Billingsgate market which is the largest wholesale fish market in the UK. There are excellent transport links
with stations in Zone 2 providing trains to the City and Canary Wharf
in 15 minutes. The Crossrail project is set to bring the Elizabeth Line to Canary Wharf which will bring more and faster direct trains to Poplar, making it a brilliant place to live for commuters. There will also be faster services to Heathrow airport.
The many schools
offer primary and secondary, special schools, religious schools and grammar schools. Ofsted ratings have been generally positive with many schools attaining ‘good’ and ‘outstanding’ scores.
