Elephant & Castle area update

Fifteen projects are underway, and they are part of the major initiative in regenerating growth and new developments within Elephant and Castle. Two major projects at the heart of the development are Elephant Park on the land formerly occupied by the Heygate Housing Estate and the ground-breaking Town Centre development, a new project that will replace the old shopping centre.

Across the Elephant and Castle area, eighteen projects are ongoing or in the late stages of planning. In addition, early housing projects are nearing completion to rehouse residents of Heygate. Elephant Park is a significant mixed-use development providing almost 2,500 new homes between now and 2025.

The developer, Lendlease, is committed to breathing new life into the area, with several new green recreational areas retaining over 100 existing mature trees and planting hundreds of new ones. Lendlease is committed to ensuring its development is one of the world's most environmentally sustainable urban regeneration projects.

Also, a participant in the Climate Positive Development Programme, meaning Elephant Park will be climate favourable when it reaches completion in 2025. Elephant Park will include a combined heat and power plant, the Energy Hub, to deliver net zero-carbon heating and hot water to all the new homes. The Elephant and Castle shopping centre is set to be developed into a new town centre to serve as the hub and focal point of the local community.

Work in the town centre is advanced, providing approximately 50 unique shops, attendant business opportunities and jobs, restaurants and cafes, and a brand-new park in the scheme's heart. The proposals will open the area to provide more pedestrian routes through the current shopping centre site and stand adjacent to a new Northern Line tube entrance and ticket hall.

Current plans include over 1,350 private rent and student homes and a new cutting-edge campus for the London College of Communication, University of the Arts London. There are extensive additional sites in various stages of development throughout the area. The opportunities offered to aspiring potential home-owning Londoners are excellent, thanks to the high-level planning and commitment of the parties involved.
