Bermondsey is an area of London on the South Bank of the River Thames and is part of the London borough of Southwark. This vibrant and historic area holds many new and exciting architectural buildings making it one of the most sought-after regions.
After the great fire of London not many buildings survived in Bermondsey. A well-known exception is the church of St Mary Magdalen which came away unscathed and buildings from this era are rare to come by in Central London. Since then Bermondsey embraced a new character of a garden suburb and now boasts a Fashion and Textile Museum, many gardens, markets, restaurants, pubs and coffee houses.
There are many attractions that cater for the old and young, for instance HMS Belfast and the London Dungeons. A notable place of interest is the Tower Bridge which was the largest and most sophisticated bascule bridge ever built being completed in 1894, after eight years of construction. Hydraulically operated, using steam to power the enormous pumping engines that fed the driving engines, which drove the bascules up (86 degrees) and down. Since 1976 they have been driven by oil and electricity.
Bermondsey has many schools
including primary and secondary, special schools, religious schools and grammar schools. Ofsted ratings have been generally positive with many schools attaining ‘good’ and ‘outstanding’ scores.
The area is centrally located with London Bridge Tube station
on the Northern Line, the Jubilee line in Zone 1 and Bermondsey Tube station in Zone 2. It has also been voted as one of the top best places to live in London.
