The village’s name originates from the 13th century local parish church dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. In the middle ages, St Mary Cray received authority from King Edward I to hold a Wednesday market marking it as a historic market town.

With the arrival of St Mary Cray Rail Station in 1860 the population of St Mary Cray grew rapidly. St Mary Cray station is located on Sayes Court Road and offers regular services to London Victoria and London Blackfriars. There are also multiple bus routes operating within the area allowing easy access to Orpington and Petts Wood.
